Willesden House
The aim of this project was to keep the late 1930’s-style modernist façade and unique turret feature, that had fallen into disrepair, but open up, modernise and connect the rest of the house throughout using a glazed void.
Wanting to renovate before they moved in, our Client approached SHA to help them radically alter the outdated décor in a way that would incorporate both their Moroccan and Pakistani lineage with a modern twist. The focus was on using the space to integrate the family, to redesign Willesden House for the purpose of connecting them all no matter where they are in the house.
The idea of transforming the space but keeping the volume and shape of the existing structure as a cost efficient solution to expanding the home was pursued. By retaining the existing structure a natural ‘void’ was created throughout the house. This void was used to create visual connections throughout the house at any time of day. This lights the space throughout the day and connects each level of the house, from the ground floor right up to the sky.
To the rear double-glazed doors span the width of the extension leading out into the garden giving a multitude of access points for light to reach the centre of the house indirectly. The glazing feature also allows diagonal views into other rooms creating moments of social connection.
A utility and cooking prep area are subtly hidden away next to the kitchen to keep the main kitchen area for clutter-free food presentation, which has made it more of a social space.
The main areas are now playful and fun for everyone. Light formations change throughout the day bringing a different feel to the spaces depending on the time of day and year. Open treads on the stairs allow light to playfully move over the walls creating patterns. To keep the element of surprise and fun, the front door and back space are separated by a wall with a door either side. On opening either of the doors, you see straight through to the back garden, which is raised up like a stage.
SHA managed to successfully incorporate the feel of a Moroccan Riad, introduce playful elements and ensure that the family and guests feels connected wherever they are.
