Mapledene

This project was an interesting one as the client is an architect but works predominantly in the commercial space. Our challenge on this occasion was to do the detailed design of the project and manage it on site given our experience in residential buildings and homes.

Often it is easier to take a step back from your own home projects to remove the emotional attachment and allow your chosen architect to make the right decisions and manage timelines and contractors.

Overview

The brief was to oversee a kitchen extension with a glazed corner to make the most of the view to the mature and private garden, and connect with nature. The challenge for us was to create the illusion of a ‘suspended’ brick gable where the glass extends out further giving them extra space, but not compromising on the view and light exposure.

Our client had designed the space herself so we were focused on the development of the engineering of the space and those all important details that make a project unique and adapted for a specific purpose. We had to figure out how to remove the column that was there originally to leave a clear and open view out into the garden. To achieve this, we worked with a specialist structural engineer to ensure that our client had the right product that would sustain the weight of the brick. This kind of focus on engineering brought us an interesting element to the design and got us thinking outside the box to deliver exactly what they wanted.
